As long as Mina can remember, she had a deep love for food. After seeing the movie My Best Friend’s Wedding when she was six years old, Julia Roberts’ character’s job as a food critic seemed like the perfect dream.
As an adult, she happily realized she could combine her interests in food and mental health as a nutrition counselor. Seeing the impact that nutritional guidance can have on someone’s journey to health inspired her to specialize in the treatment of eating disorders.
Her goals as a clinician
Mina’s goal is to provide empathic, holistic care to help her clients rebuild a positive relationship with food and their bodies. She also believes that reducing the stigma around mental health is crucial. Mina shares, “I wish for a world where seeking help for mental health issues is seen as a sign of strength rather than weakness”.
She is also an advocate for early intervention. Increasing efforts for early detection and intervention can prevent mental health issues from escalating. For example, better mental health education and screening in schools and workplaces.
Mina is inspired by the work of The Body Positive, a non-profit organization based in the bay area. They offer interactive trainings on resiliency and cultivating positive body image for students, educators and treatment professionals.
In her spare time…
Per Mina, “I love immersing myself in a good book and journaling when I have a lot on my mind. Spending time in nature and staying active are also important to me.
Whether it’s a Pilates class, hiking, or taking a walk with my dog, Teddy, I enjoy moving my body in various ways. Equally important, I make sure to give my body the rest it needs to stay balanced and healthy”.
Mina’s key steps to recovery include:
- seeking professional help to address both the psychological and nutritional aspects of the disorder
- building a supportive network to help motivate + maintain recovery
- developing a balanced relationship with food through gradual, sustainable changes
Lastly, she believes it is essential to practice self-compassion and patience throughout the recovery process. The true picture of recovery may be hard to envision, but with patience it will become clearer and clearer. She enjoys helping her clients take the steps to not only see what recovery could look like, but live it.
